1960s

The 1960s saw the birth of a teenage generation determined to make a statement distinct from that of its parents. The home was changing; more flexible living was demanded and the “white heat of technology” was underway.

The 606 Universal Shelving System grew from and for this culture, allowing change to be embraced via the notion of starting small, adding to it and taking it with you when you move.

Today

Little did Vitsœ’s founder, Niels Vitsœ, and Dieter Rams realise that their vision of the late 1950s would be seen as a model of sustainable thinking in the 21st century.

Today the 606 Universal Shelving System is respected for its endurance because of its ability to evolve and improve with the passage of time – just like nature’s fittest species. After all, they thought that their vision was purely common sense.

Vitsœ’s ethos

Back in 1959 Vitsœ’s proposition was to eschew fashion while creating products that would be the neutral canvas on which to paint your colourful life.

After half a century our resolve is stronger than ever: more of us must learn the art of living better with less that lasts longer.
